Can Meditation Change Your Life?


What exactly is meditation? It seems that so many people nowadays are hooked up with this form of activity. By definition, meditation is often used to describe the individual's state of intense attention on an object of awareness or thought. The individual tries to turn his or her attention inward.

Meditation is said to be of Vedic Hinduism origin. This is usually practiced in the eastern religions but now even the western culture is already involved in such activity.

People want to practice meditation so that they can focus their mind to God for their personal development, to attain peace of mind, and to be healthier.

Many Americans are now involved in some form of meditation. According to Time Magazine there is one meditation practice that can be used by almost anyone. This can be considered as the basic primer of Americans wanting to begin meditation but have no idea where to start.

There was a book published in November 2005 authored by Victor Davich that is all about the 8 minute meditation. If you purchase the book and study it carefully, you will learn a lot of things about meditation, and you can do it in just 8 minutes.

Almost every individual who starts with anything new to him or her will often have lingering questions, hopes, and doubts about it. There are even people who hopes that when they begin to meditate, they will be enlightened. Or perhaps you're one of those individuals who think that meditation is just like an exercise or diet that you've been trying to do for the past few months. But these things are normal; so don't be surprised if you're also like that.

The best thing to do is to face all the positive and/or negative expectations, and after doing so, forget about them and start with a clean slate. If you want to try the 8-minute program of meditation, you should learn how to approach it one minute at a time.

While many people think that meditation is a simple practice, then you'd better think twice. You might not notice it, but your mind is always racing from here to there. You can't concentrate. According to the book's author, you must watch your breath. This is the very first step to meditation. Do your inhalation and exhalation by breathing deeply. If you always do this and just keep on practicing, you can become good in meditation.

As a word of reminder, if you catch yourself thinking about other things, or in other words your mind strays off, focus again on your breathing. After all, meditation is all about concentrating and if you realize that you're not on the right track, you can always return to that state of mind gently. Don't get discouraged easily and just keep on practicing. There is a popular saying that says practice makes perfect; so always keep that in mind. If you quit easily, then you will remain a quitter.

Popular Yoga Poses You Must Try


Yoga is taking the world by storm. Millions of people around the world practice this ancient discipline which is from India. There are many mental, physical and spiritual benefits that can be derived from yoga.

You may have seen people on TV doing certain yoga poses and you may not have any idea what these poses are or what they are called. Each pose has a purpose to either strengthen a muscle or gently massage your internal organs. There are several other reasons for each pose.

The five yoga poses below are some of the most popular poses and you should strive to be able to do them and hold the pose if necessary. As with all things, there is a learning curve with yoga too. It may take you some time to get accustomed to the pose if you're new to yoga. Persist and you'll be able to do them in no time at all.

The Downward Dog

Definitely one of the most popular and most often seen poses. To do this pose, you will be on your knees in a baby crawl position. Your palms will be directly below your shoulders on the floor and your knees just below your hips.

From this position, with your fingers wide open, you will move your palms a few inches forward and raise your knees so that your hips are lifted off the floor. You should be in an inverted V shaped position. Straighten knees but do not lock them. Your head should be between your arms. Do not let it hang.

The Mountain

This is a relatively easy pose. Stand straight and keep your feet close together. Keep your arms by your sides and your shoulders relaxed. Slowly raise your hands till they are above your head. Breathe deeply as you do this and both palms must face each other. Keep your arms raised as you try to reach for the sky. Breathe deeply and in a relaxed manner.

The Warrior Pose

This is the pose that you see on the cover of most yoga books of DVDs. Its a stylish pose to look at and very beneficial for the body. To do this pose, you need to stand with your feet apart wider than your hips. Next, you turn your right leg 90 degrees and slowly lower yourself till your right knee is bent at 90 degrees. Extend both your arms by each side with the palms facing down. Hold this pose for a minute and breathe in a gentle manner. After that, change sides and repeat.

The Tree Pose

Another common pose. You will stand straight with both your feet together. Slowly shift your weight to the left leg and raise your right sole and place it against your left thigh. Then raise both your arms above your head and place both palms together as if you are praying.

The Bridge

Lie flat on the floor. Keep your knees bent. Your hands must be by your sides and your back must be flat on the floor. Slowly raise your hips till the angle your knees form in almost 90 degrees. Your arms will press against the floor for stability and keep your thighs parallel to the floor. Keep your chin tucked to prevent injury to your neck.

These are some of the most common and beneficial poses that any beginner should aim to do. They will build your strength and balance. As you progress, you can learn the more difficult poses.

Pilates vs. Yoga


This is a common question that many people have. To the ordinary onlooker, there really does not seem to be much difference between yoga and Pilates. However, upon further inspection, you'll see that the differences can be rather profound.

In truth, neither exercise is necessarily better nor worse than the other. The one you choose to embrace will depend largely upon your own personal goals and preferences. Here, we're going to take a look at some of the similarities and differences associated with both of these disciplines. This should help you to make a quality decision for yourself.

Of course, there is no rule stating that you can't do both. There is no right or wrong answer here and neither discipline need be mutually exclusive. Unlike bodybuilding which requires its practitioners not to engage in long cardio sessions, neither yoga nor Pilates has such rules. You can certainly alternate these exercises on a daily (or weekly) basis.

At this time, let's take a brief moment to cover a few key aspects of each discipline. Expect to gain a much clearer understanding of both yoga and Pilates in the next few paragraphs!

Yoga originated in India over 5000 years ago. Pilates was created far more recently by a gentleman named Joseph Pilates, in an attempt to help with his own physical rehabilitation and to strengthen his body. So, yoga has a considerably more expansive history, as well as many more forms than Pilates.

Yoga aims to strike a balance between the body, mind, and spirit. This is an eastern philosophy. The breathing and meditation techniques in yoga aim to connect with the spirit. Pilates however, only focuses on a mind and body connection.

Generally, most Pilates sessions are more intense than yoga sessions. If you are looking for quicker results, you may wish to go with Pilates. It is more focused on strengthening your core muscles and making you stronger. Yoga aims for flexibility, circulatory benefits, and mental well-being. There are some forms of yoga, such as Ashtanga yoga or Bikram yoga, that are far more challenging. But in most cases, Pilates is a harder workout with faster results.

As such, you'll need to decide if you'd prefer something fast, furious, and more results oriented... or something slower, steadier, and more well-steeped in tradition. This is the classic hare and tortoise scenario, and which of these two animals you'd like to be will clearly be determined by the personal goals you've set for yourself. That said, it bears repeating that you can engage in both activities.

As a whole, yoga tends to be a bit less structured than Pilates. Since there are many poses in yoga, these poses may be arranged in many different routines with no set order. Pilates is generally quite structured, and each move follows the next. Yoga also has a meditation element.

Many yoga practitioners chant and meditate at the beginning and end of a session. This is to create focus, dedication, and appreciation for the art. Pilates, which is much more modern, does not embrace this particular element. It's a more calculated form of exercise that aims to strengthen and heal the body with specific moves and specific goals.

The breathing techniques in yoga are considerably more complex than Pilates. With Pilates, the breathing technique is pretty straightforward. You inhale through the nose and exhale through the mouth. With yoga, your breathing will be much deeper and your breaths will follow the movements, poses and postures. You will be breathing in and out through the nose. Usually in yoga classes there is a dedicated period of time just for breathing techniques known as pranayama.

So which do you choose? Pilates or Yoga? Well, are you looking to de-stress and calm your mind? If the answer is yes, then yoga is for you. If you are only interested in strengthening your core muscles and back muscles, Pilates is your answer.

What Are The Different Types Of Yoga?

There are so many different types of yoga today, with this comes a problematic situation for beginners, it is best to choose a form of yoga that is appropriate for everyone’s
level of fitness, physical and spiritual goals and health condition. Some of the most common types of yoga are listed below and briefly explained to guide you in choosing the best type of yoga that you can start with.

Iyengar Yoga: these types of yoga are solely focused on the alignment and precise movements. Yoga props such as blocks and straps are usually used as part of this type of yoga for those beginners who are not as flexible as the experts as to compensate for injuries. Mantra yoga: much more known as the yoga of potent sound. These types of yoga aims at liberation through the verbal or mental repetition of empowered sounds, such as "om," "hum," or "ram."

The Many Benefits Of Yoga


We have all heard that Yoga has many benefits for natural health that can have a profound effect on your mind, body and spirit.  You may be surprised by  the multitude of ailments that can be remedied by including Yoga into your daily life.


The practice of Yoga brings with it many physical and emotional benefits that the majority of people are unaware of. Yoga is a science; and indeed, in many places in the world (such as India), it is referred to as a science. This is not merely playing with words; it truly is approached as a science, which means that it is understood in terms of scientific methods.

Yogic science seeks to verify cause and effect, and build principles based upon objective observations. Indeed, in many places around the world, to be a yogic master of any credibility, one must be highly educated in the sciences, including physics and the biological sciences.

This discussion on yoga as science is important for us to include because it allows us to sensibly ask the question: what are the benefits of yoga? After all, if yoga is a faith or a belief, then asking this question isn't fair; because it's one that yoga cannot answer in terms that we can objectively understand.

Yoga is a science; as empirical and pragmatic as kinesiology, or exercise science, which seeks to understand how the body acts and reacts to changes in the internal physical environment. And even more simply than any of this: each of us has a right to ask the basic question, "why should I bother practicing yoga and what experience or benefits can I expect?"

Indeed, while the experience of yoga cannot be reduced to words just as reading a book on preparing for a marathon isn't going to actually physically prepare you to run a marathon.

Here's the Mayo Clinic's take on the benefits of meditation: 

"Meditation is used by people who are perfectly healthy as a means of stress reduction. But if you have a medical condition that's worsened by stress, you might find the practice valuable in reducing the stress-related effects of allergies, asthma, chronic pain and arthritis, among others."

Yoga involves a series of postures, during which you pay special attention to your breathing and exhaling during certain movements and inhaling with others. You can approach yoga as a way to promote physical flexibility, strength and endurance or as a way to enhance your spirituality.

The Mind-Body Connection 

Yoga is centered on the mind-body connection. This mind-body harmony is achieved through three things:

- postures (asanas)

- proper breathing (pranayama)

- meditation

Mind and body draw inspiration and guidance from the combined practices of asanas, breathing, and meditation. As people age (to yogis, ageing is an artificial condition), our bodies become susceptible to toxins and poisons (caused by environmental and poor dietary factors).

Yoga helps us through a cleaning process, turning our bodies into a well synchronized and well-oiled piece of machinery.

What Is Yoga


Yoga can seem like a complicated concept - or, at the least, a dizzying array of physical manipulations that turn seemingly happy-looking human beings into happy looking human pretzels.

Even more disconcerting, a stereotype does exist in places where the term yoga is synonymous with cult, or some kind of archaic spiritual belief that compels one to quit their job, sell their house, and go live in the middle of nowhere.

In actual fact, Yoga is a very basic "thing". If you have ever had the opportunity to visit a country where it has been established for generations, like India, Japan, China, and others, really nothing unusual, in fact its simply just, "ordinary".

The practice of yoga came to the west back in 1893 when one of Indias most celebrated gurus, Swami Vivekananda, was welcomed at the World Fair in Chicago. He is now known for having sparked the West interest in yoga.

Literally, the word yoga comes from the Sanskrit term Yug, which means: to yoke, bind, join, or direct one attention. At the same time, yoga can also imply concepts such as fusion, union, and discipline.

The sacred scriptures of Hinduism (an ancient belief system from India that has a global presence) also defines yoga as a discipline; the kind of discipline that, leads to inner and outer union, harmony and joy.

In essence, yoga is most commonly understood as conscious living; of tapping into ones inner potential for happiness.

What Yoga Is not:

Sometimes it is helpful to understand things by what they are not; especially when dealing with a topic, like Yoga, that is quite easily misunderstood.

Yoga is NOT calisthenics (marked by the headstand, the lotus posture or some pretzel-like pose). While it is true that yoga involves many postures and especially in Hatha yoga which is only intended to help people get in touch with their inner feelings.

Yoga is NOT a system of meditation and or a religion in the way many people are misled to believe. Meditation is only part of the whole process of bringing ourselves into the realm of the spiritual.

What is the essence of Yoga?

Virtually all yogic science and philosophy states that a human being is but a fragment of an enormous universe, and when this human being learns to communicate with this vastness, then he/she attains union with something that is bigger than him/her.

The art of tapping into something bigger than self enables one to walk the true path of happiness. By flowing along with the force, the individual is able to discover truth, and with truth comes realization; but to attain realization, our words, thoughts and deeds must be based on truth.

7 Yoga Tips For Newbies


Yoga has been proven to relieve stress by using exercises that unify the mind, body, and spirit.

If you are new to yoga, these seven tips will start you on the road to what we believe could become a more centered life.

1. Talk to your doctor: and explain what type of yoga poses you intend to practice. Show your doctor pictures of the poses for illustration. Your doctor may rule out specific poses if you have high blood pressure, glaucoma, a history of retinal detachment, or heart disease. Make sure you follow your doctor's recommendations.

2. Find a yoga class:
 that best fits your abilities. Talk to prospective teachers, and decide whether or not you can handle a program before you sign up. It's very important to take it one step at a time. Try a few beginner classes before you attempt a more vigorous class. Don't move ahead too quickly.

Allow your body to adjust.

3. Listen to your body: and be aware of your physical abilities. You don't want to hurt yourself. Make sure the instructor understands your level of experience and any limitations you may have. Don't allow anyone to push you ahead too quickly. Remember, this is supposed to be fun and relaxing.

4. If you can't find a class that meets your needs:
, you can always practice yoga at home. There are many books, programs, and tapes available to help you get started. Search for the best products on the Internet and read reviews. Talk to others for recommendations.

5. Try private lessons: You can book some one-on-one sessions with a teacher in your area. Most yoga instructors offer private classes or can help you design your own program. This is a good way to get started. You can always take group lessons or practice at home after you've had private lessons and learned the basics.

6. Find a yoga buddy: It's nice to practice with someone and it will help with motivation, as well as reduce injuries, while keeping up your enthusiasm and interest.

7. Eat lightly before practice:
 Wait at least two hours after meals before yoga class or practice. An empty stomach is best, but don't let yourself get too hungry to think. You won't be able to focus on the poses or enjoy yourself during the relaxation or meditation exercises.
